Time for truth about USS Liberty
Commercial-News
GEORGETOWN — Editor:
An anniversary is coming up in June, a day for every U.S. citizen to remember — the attack on the USS Liberty by a so-called friend, Israel.
Last month I had the privilege of traveling for a visit with one of the crew of this proud ship. Our country and its leaders turned their backs and refused to support the crew in a time of war. What else can you call it? President Lyndon Johnson should have been impeached. The word “Classified” is supposed to heal the deaths, wounds destruction of families and shame? Not for this American.
A friend had set up our meeting at a restaurant about 75 miles from here. This survivor had already arrived and he greeted us. We talked about other things. I had requested that my friend ask the Liberty crew member to bring his helmet. I had been informed about its condition. After 30 minutes or so, I asked about the helmet. He reached under the table and brought it out.
I sat in silence. There were two holes almost dead center, one the size of a silver dollar and the other a little smaller. Only divine intervention could have saved him.
Isn’t it time our government released these brave men from their bondage? Tell the truth about the attack.
The projectile scars run below his ear and down his neck. The scars he carries on the inside will never heal.
There will be a USS Liberty reunion on June 5 in Evansville, Ind.
Isn’t it time our government built a monument to honor these sailors?
